Privacy Policy
Karunya Foundation ("we", "us") operates a mobile app for its students and karunyafoundation.org. We collect as little as we can, we show no advertisements, we run no third-party analytics or trackers, and we never sell or rent personal information. This policy explains what we do collect and why.
Information you give us
- Account details. When you sign in to the app we collect your email address, and at registration your name and phone number. Sign-in uses one-time email codes; we never store a password.
- Messages. If you email us, we keep the correspondence so we can respond.
Information created as you use the app
- Practice history. When you complete a meditation, the app records the date, a session count, and the minutes practiced, so your profile can show your totals and recent days. If you answer the optional "How do you feel?" question, a daily count per answer is recorded. No record is kept of which specific meditation you played.
- Access. Practices you unlock with an access code are remembered on your account.
- On your device only. Samagri checklist ticks and display preferences (such as hiding your streak) are stored on your device and never leave it.
Location
The panchangam on the home screen defaults to Johannesburg. If you tap "Use my location", the app reads your position once and sends only approximate coordinates (rounded to about a kilometre) to the Nitya Panchangam service to compute local sunrise, sunset, and muhurta times. We do not store your location, and the app never reads it without that tap.
Service providers
The app runs on Amazon Web Services in the Africa (Cape Town) region: Amazon Cognito handles sign-in, and our own database stores the account and practice records above. Audio, video, and documents are delivered through Amazon CloudFront using expiring signed links. Nitya Panchangam receives only the approximate coordinates described above. These providers process data on our behalf and under our instructions.
Security
All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Sign-in tokens are kept in your device's secure storage. Access to our systems is limited to the foundation's administrators.
Retention and deletion
We keep your account information and practice history while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from Profile, Delete account in the app; this permanently removes your profile, unlocked practices, and practice history, and deletes your sign-in identity. You can also ask us by email. See Account deletion for details.
This website
karunyafoundation.org is a static site. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. It is served by Cloudflare, which processes visitors' IP addresses as part of delivering the site securely.
Children
The app and website are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.
Your rights
You may ask us at any time to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, subject to applicable law, by writing to [email protected].
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its effective date. Material changes will be noted in the app or by email.
